| SWR ILLUMITRON
The SWR ILLUMITRON FM antenna is offered as a replacement
and upgrade for almost any conventional transmitting
antenna in the FM Broadcast Service. In reality, it
is not a single antenna model, but a full line of antennas
with certain unique features and performance specifications
in common. A typical ILLUMITRON is designed to operate
on a single frequency (or a range of frequencies) in
the FM Broadcast Band for one or more analog and/or
digital radio stations operating at a power level between
100 watts and 100 kilowatts. Standard models are designed
to provide a uniform omnidirectional azimuth pattern
when mounted in “free space”, or a reasonably
uniform pattern when mounted on a “real world”
supporting structure, such as a pole or tower. Also,
custom models are available to meet the specific azimuth
pattern requirements of a directional license issued
by the Federal Communications Commission or a foreign
governmental agency. In all cases, guaranteed performance
specifications are provided with each antenna, including
mounting conditions required in order to meet those
specifications.
Unlike
typical FM broadcast antennas, each and every ILLUMITRON
antenna is designed and constructed to meet strict elevation
pattern specifications. In most cases, more than 99%
of antenna input power is radiated in a single lobe
toward the horizon, which virtually eliminates harmful
side lobes and radiation toward the ground. This feature
all but eliminates the possibility of RF Radiation (RFR)
and RF Interference (RFI) problems, and it also results
in major reduction of multipath and random field intensity
variation within the service area. (Typical random variations
are reduced from +/- 10 dB to less than +/- 2 dB.) As
a result, minimum field intensity in a particular area
may increase by several dB, even though average field
intensity remains unchanged. For the same reason, maximum
field intensity typically decreases within the same
area, resulting in a significant reduction of interference
to all co-channel and adjacent channel stations. Common
characteristics of the ILLUMITRON include:
1. A precision center-feed (or branch feed) power divider
and phase-matched bays.
2. A single-lobe elevation pattern with no significant
nulls or side lobes,
3. High quality materials and workmanship throughout
all components.
4. Conservative design specifications with adequate
reserve for the environment.
5. Designed to perform well for many years under extreme
operating conditions.
6. Designed to minimize or eliminate interference to
all site users and neighbors.
7. When installed and adjusted in accordance with factory
instructions, all ILLUMITRON antennas are guaranteed
to fully comply with applicable FCC rules and regulations
(in effect at the time of manufacture) and with the
terms of the FCC station license (or construction permit)
under which it was specified.*
* in some cases (in all cases, for a licensed directional
FM station), Site Specific Engineering must be purchased
with the antenna in order to obtain this guaranty of
compliance. Also, unauthorized repairs or modifications
may terminate this guarantee.
